The Mask of the Red Death Essay

The Mask of the Red Death by Edgar Allan Poe is a dark story with many meanings to it. The color violet has a particularly interesting meaning, it means dull and painful. How this relates to the story is very interesting. In the Mask of the Red Death, there are seven rooms in the setting of a castle and each room has a different color. Violet is the second to last room, this particular color relates to the story very well because when the Prince runs through the Violet room it is the time right before his death. This color means a painful reminder that the end is near, and when the Prince runs out of this room he meets his tragic death. An estimate of the color’s age in a person is seventies thru ninedies. When most reach this age it is near the end of their life. Violet is a color that shows darkness and the end being near.
In the story The Mask of the Red Death, the clock of ebony is a very important part of the plot. In the story the clock affected the people or guests by their actions. If the clock stopped so did the guests. This clock controlled the fate of the Prince as well as the guests. Time can be related to some one’s life span, everytime the clock struck one hour everyone paused, then after the time passed everything was back to normal. The color violet was the second to last room, meaning that it was the closest to death. The color could be related to time as around eleven o’clock or close to twelve. The time in a person’s life that is near their death is around this time. Violet is an example of the closeness of death and the closeness of the end of the hour or time.
The color violet relates to my life in many ways. It does not necessarily mean that I have experienced the age that violet symbolizes, but I know people who are experiencing it right now. My grandmother is seventy two and is a very wise woman, but in some ways dulling or becoming less active. She is realizing that she has lived a full life and is preparing for the time ahead. Violet is a color that means sadness and in this time of life most elderly people do experience sadness knowing that the end is near. My life is not yet at this stage, but watching my grandparents and other people experience it helps me realize the meaning of this stage of life. The importance of violet in the story is the Prince realizing that the end is near, which shows when the red death arrives at the party. The Prince has a painful reminder that the end of his life is near and tries to avoid it by going through the flashbacks of his younger life, by running through the rooms.
