Folger's Theatre Blog

Folger's Theatre was an fun and exciting experience. I absolutely loved walking around and getting to see D.C. I thought the actors were funny and energetic about Shakepeare. I enjoyed how during the performance they did not use examples from one play, but instead several. the performers explained to us how Shakespeare's language was not as different from our modern language. It opened my eyes to this and now I am able to understand Shakespeare with a new idea in my head. The performers were very talented and knew what they were talking about. I will never look at Shakespeare's writing the same way again. Afterwards, walking in D.C was a huge amount of fun, I enjoyed seeing it. The food court was especially good!

Response

Their Eyes Were Watching God is a sad, but meaningful novel. At first Janie's life does not look like it is going anywhere, when she is married to an older man and then an abusive husband. The reader can easily feel for Janie, since she is being pushed around by others. Janie is a young girl simply trying to find love, but later she eventually does. Through her first marriage she learns that "a marriage does not make love" and learns that love can not be forced. In Janie's second marriage she learns, what she wants in a man. She eventually finds love, which helps her realize that God is in control of her life. In this book Janie realizes that she cannot control her fate. This is a very meaningful realization that is huge in the book.

Ode to Chris
You were the older brother that I always adored,
It is sad to see you gone;
I will miss your smile forever and never let it be ignored,
Your spirit will live on;
You left without even a word said,
It hurts me beyond belief;
No contact meant that our friendship was dead,
It caused our family much grief;
I did not know where you would go or wander,
I just wanted to know that you would come home;
You had so much you needed to ponder,
Did your Odyssey take you to Rome?
I saw so much promise in all that lay before you,
You were always so brave and kind;
When I discovered you never made it through,
I just will not let you out of my mind;
I cried myself to sleep,
Shivering in my cold bed;
I could only weep,
I wished you had been fed.
