Symbolism

Lamp post- light symbol of light and hope for new town of Eatonville
A dog- to represent how not to treat a lady
Horizon- represents new dreams and wishes coming along with new beginings
Gate- opening to new possibilities do the “road”
General Store- represents progress in Eatonville because black people in town have their own store and its owned by black store owners. Also a central meeting spot of town
Janie long hair- Bi racial roots and her freedom as a woman
Janie head rag- Shows Joe’s control and similar to slavery
Briad- her as a woman
Muck- rich, a good working place and prosperity
Hurricane- gods power
Rabid Dog- what happens in Janies life
Packet of seeds- rebirth and memory of Tea Cake
The road- walked all over my joe
Sea- love
Ship- was a dream
