Thier Eyes Were Watching God Part 2


1.     Tea Cake convinces Janie that his feelings for her are true by asking her to play checker’s and treating her like she was his equal. “Everyone was surprised at Janie playin checkers but they liked it.” (101)

2.      The towns reaction was anger, because they all felt Tea Cake was playing Janie for her money. They also felt Janie could do better than Tea Cake. “All the men that she could get and fooling with somebody like Tea Cake!” (110)
3.     Sam Watson’s challenge to Phoeby was to go and tell Janie that Tea Cake was not right for her. Also to convince her to not court Tea Cake.   
4.     Janie said that she trusts Tea Cake. She says there are plenty of other single women that Tea Cake could choose from. “Still and all Ah’d rather be with Tea Cake.”(113)
5.     She is willing to take a chance with Tea Cake because she has taken chances before and knows she has a place to come back to if it does not work.
6.     Janie become worried with Tea Cake disappearing with the money. She begins to doubt he will return. “She was broken and her pride was gone, so she told those who asked what had happened.”(119)
7.     Tea Cake goes to get fish and then decides to throw a party. He pays for the people at the party as well. “One word brought on another one and pretty soon he made up his mind to spend some of it.”(122)
8.     Tea Cake does not want Janie to come to the party because she is afraid other men will check her out. He also feels she might leave him for a wealthier man. “I was too skeered Ah might lose yuh.”(124)
9.     The muck is a gambling place. Tea Cake has an obsession with playing cards.
10.               It is very odd Janie would want to work in the fields with Tea Cake, since in previous marriages she refused to do much work. This was because she was so depressed. “When do de job open up, Tea Cake” (130)
11.               Janie’s first experience with jealousy is with a girl who shows she has a crush on Tea Cake. She becomes angry and approaches Tea Cake about the problem.
12.               Mrs. Turner is drawn to Janie because she is half white and Mrs. Turner is racist. She favors Janie because she does not look as dark as most. “Miss Turner was a milky sort of woman.”(139)
13.               The snubs Janie gave Mrs.Turner did not work because she felt honored by Janie’s presence and forgave her. She refused to be angry with Janie.
14.               Janie’s social status at the muck is as popular as she is in Eatonville and she is chased after by many men. Janie is popular among women too, they respect her. “Tea Cake you sho is a lucky man.” (147)
15.                Tea Cake wanted to strike Janie to show he was boss. He wanted the other men to know that he had control of the relationship.
16.               Tea Cake’s plot was to start a fake fight in Mrs.Turner’s eating place and scare her off. He got help from his friends who had problems with Mrs.Turner as well. This did not succeed. “Let him fight lik o man. Take your hands off me Tea Cake.” (151)
17.               Tea Cake’s reaction to the hurricane coming was of no concern about the hurricane and thought it would be a simple storm. He also did not want to lose days on harvest if it was only a rumor. “Hello Lias you leavin I see.” (138)
18.                The signifigance of this quote is to show how the characters in this book did not really have control over their lives. “Their eyes were watching God” waiting for the next part in their lives to begin.
19.                The dog in the hurricane tried to attack Janie and Tea Cake came to save her. Unfortunately Tea Cake got bit by the dog and got rabies. This is a very bad sickness.
20.                Tea Cake gets pushed around by these men and they threaten him.
They also put him to work and told him if he did not cooperate they would arrest him. “Git on down de road dere, suh!”(170)
21.                Tea Cake sent Janie news on a friend, called Sterett who passed away in the flood. Janie becomes sad and realizes that other lives could be lost.
22.                Tea Cake had rabies, which would not allow him to ingest food or water. It eventually caused him to go insane.
23.               Tea Cake gets killed by Janie because he went insane. Janie kills him in self defense and loves him a lot.
24.               Janie leaves the muck because of the rumors spreading around Tea Cake’s death. Also because there are to many sad memories.
25.                She is able to live in her old house because she has finally experienced love. She is finally at peace with herself and realizes that it is up to God.
